Lynn Williams, Secretary SCA Canterbury, presents Jack Duff with the Branch’s award for ‘Speaking the Speech’ at the University of Otago Sheilah Winn Festival Showcase, held at the Grange Theatre, Middleton Grange Theatre in Christchurch. Jack played Malvolio in St Andrew’s College’s Twelfth Night.
William Shakespeare wrote about all levels of society for all levels of society. One of his many skills was to make words substitute for elaborate staging and properties, words that generated an atmosphere and a sense of time.
President of SCA Dianne Jones says, "It is in discovering the meaning in these words and the feelings of the characters that speak them that Shakespeare comes to life. His characters experience the emotions we do today and when young actors discover this they lift the words off the page, discovering their true meaning and bringing the characters to life.
SCA Registered Teachers support festivals that keep alive the teaching of Shakespeare and all good writers, and celebrate those young people who make the journey many have made before them."
