Council of the Association

Council is the Executive of the Association. The President and Council Members are elected by Association members at the Annual General Meeting. Each elected term of office is for two years. The Vice President is a Council member and is elected annually by the Council.

The Council holds monthly teleconferences and meets face-to-face twice a year.

Council is responsible for governance of the Association and employs an Administrator.

A background in theatre and broadcasting has provided Dianne with an ideal blend of skills and experience on which to base her career in teaching voice, communication and presentation/performance skills.

Dianne is SCA Canterbury Branch President, and in addition to her private studio, teaches at St Andrew’s College, tutors radio and television students at Christchurch Polytechnic Broadcasting School, tutors at Simon Williams’ Beyond the Camera at St Andrew’s College, and facilitates for corporate trainers, Talent2.

Apart from tutoring students, Dianne’s broadcasting connections are maintained by being a member of the Broadcasting Club.  She has also just completed and attained her Bachelor of Broadcasting Communications (Executive) Degree.

Onstage, backstage and directing roles in theatre remain on hold because of teaching commitments, but Dianne is active in Christchurch’s Repertory Theatre as Chair and with involvement in Publicity and assisting Front-of-House

Donna McKinlay-Jones

A teacher of Public Speaking, Speech and Drama and the Oral Assessment Programme.
She has also directed productions for regional repertory societies and local schools.
Donna is an examiner for Speech NZ and an SCA Accredited Adjudicator for Performing Arts Festivals.

Known as Dinie, born in The Netherlands, 7 August 1954, I was encouraged from an early age to be involved in drama and have been ever since. 

In NZ I have been involved in acting, and directing in Community Drama groups, Youth Productions, School Productions, Sheilah Winn, and NZ Theatre Federation. 

Currently tutoring Speech & Drama at St. Margarets College in Christchurch, I have been teaching in schools from 1999.

Anna Coleman

Anna teaches Speech and Drama at King's School and Pinehurst in Auckland.  She has a background in media and has more than ten years experience in advertising and radio.

She is an oral assessor and clearly sees the advantages of setting up strong oral communication programmes in schools.  She is passionate about leadership, teaching children with learning difficulties and is working towards becoming a communication coach and a Speech New Zealand examiner.

As the president of the Auckland Branch Anna understands of the importance of the SCA as a way of bringing teachers together, in what can be an isolating environment, for regular networking, sharing ideas and professional development.  She is excited about being on the council for her first term, and contributing to Cue and  marketing and membership portfolios.

Delena Costello
Del is a co-opted Council Member.
 
Del started Tall Poppies Drama School in 2006 with a vision of providing top quality private classes to students of all ages. In 2010 the business was extended to becomeTall Poppies Group Ltd.  This new growth includes the development of the Academy, Adult Education and Consultancy areas of the business.
Del is a fully qualified and registered teacher of Speech, Drama and Communication. On completing her Arts Degree and Speech and Drama qualifications in Dunedin in the 90’s, she went on to open a teaching studio Hamilton and then Christchurch.
Del then continued her teaching at the Christchurch Polytechnic and latterly the International Pacific College in Palmerston North.
In 2008, Del was the integral recipient of a Deidre Sneddon Education Trust grant that provided an opportunity for her to attend the International Conference for Drama in Education and study in Athens, Greece.
Committed to the industry, she is a co-opted Council Member of the Speech Communication Association of NZ (Inc) which involves maintaining industry standards, providing professional development for teachers nationwide and generally promoting communication and learning through drama. In 2010 Del was awarded the Meredith Caisley National Award for Public Relations (SCA NZ).
As a performer, Del has participated in many amateur productions and has a real commitment to NZ literature.

Cheryl La Hood

Cheryl was born and educated in Dunedin.
She attended Otago University where she completed a M.A. (hons).
Cheryl has been a secondary school teacher for 35 years.
During this time she worked with students of all abilities, wrote many work units which were included in publications and is the co-founder of the Otago Secondary Art Association.

Cheryl has coached and promoted public speaking, debating, drama and as directed a multitude of plays throughout her career.
She designed and delivered a Communication Certificate course which is still operating in the Dunedin area.

Cheryl has been an active member of the PPTA; was Regional Facilitator of NZQA and has assisted training teachers in implementing the new curriculum.

Cheryl is now retired from Secondary School teaching and is pursuing the teaching of drama and communication in the Otago region.

Glenda Pearce

Glenda Pearce

Glenda has returned to live in Auckland after two decades in Northland. 

Glenda has worked in primary, secondary and tertiary education and developed particular expertise in English, Public Speaking, Drama, Assessment and Gifted Ed.   In her M.Ed. (2010), she focused her studies in Ethics, Evaluation, and Assessment for Diverse Learners. 

Glenda has a BA in English and LTCL (Dist) in Speech and Drama.  She has taught ESOL adult learners as well as working for a PTE.  Has run her own private speech and drama practice – sometimes fulltime, sometimes part-time. Glenda particularly enjoys adjudication opportunities. 

For the past 8 years she has been employed in work in a range of national and regional roles – both for the Ministry of Education and the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. 

Glenda began her career in speech and drama at aged seven and has never stopped wondering at its magic.

 Glenda is totally passionate about the power of effective oral communication and the creativity of drama.

In 2011 it is her intention to be employed in secondary education again.
